SSH, which is an abbreviation for Secure Shell, is a network protocol which is used to exchange encrypted data between a client and a server, making it impossible for unauthorized parties to intercept any info. Many tech-savvy customers favor SSH due to the higher security level. The connection is established and the commands are delivered through a command line. The offered options depend on the type of web hosting service - on a shared server, for example, files may be relocated or deleted, databases could be imported and exported, and archives could be set up or unpacked. On a virtual or a dedicated server, the choices are much more - the web server and the database server could be started/stopped/rebooted, server-side software may be installed and more. These things are not possible on a shared server, due to the fact that full root access is needed and all the other clients on that server shall be affected. Although SSH is used largely with UNIX-like OSs, there are SSH clients for other OSs too - Windows, Mac OS, and so on.

SSH Telnet in Shared Web Hosting

SSH access is available with all Linux shared web hosting packages that we provide. With some of them, it's featured by default, while with others it's an additional upgrade that you can include with just a few mouse clicks from your hosting CP. You can get SSH access through the section dedicated to it where you shall also find the info that you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You may select the password that you shall use and, if necessary, you shall be able to change it with several mouse clicks from the same location. All the commands that could be used with our shared plans are listed within a help article along with relevant instances. If the SSH access feature is enabled for your account, you'll also be able to upload files through your favorite FTP client via an SFTP connection.

SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Hosting

SSH access is offered as standard with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you may add it from the hosting Control Panel if needed - even only for the current month. In either case, you are able to activate and de-activate the feature with just one mouse click via the SSH section of the CP. In the same place, you will see the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You'll also find a box in which you can type in the password which you want to use, because it doesn't have to be the same as the one you use to log into the CP. For better protection, you may also change it as often as you need. The full list of the commands which can be performed inside a semi-dedicated account is supplied in our Knowledge Base, together with the syntax and a couple of instances. An extra function after SSH access is activated shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP through any FTP client that supports such connections.
